Garden
The Asticou Azalea Garden in Northeast Harbor, Maine, is a serene and beautifully designed 2.3-acre garden created in 1956-57 by Charles Kenneth Savage, a lifelong local resident who was inspired by Japanese garden design.
The garden features a collection of azaleas and rhododendrons, many of which were brought from the gardens of famed landscape architect Beatrix Farrand in Bar Harbor, with financial support from John D. Rockefeller Jr. It is styled as a Japanese stroll garden, with meandering gravel paths that mimic flowing water, garden rooms that encourage reflection and serenity, and elements like a pond, sand garden, and bamboo edging.
The garden balances natural Maine coastal features with traditional Japanese aesthetics, creating an illusion of greater space and inviting visitors to enjoy peaceful walks and contemplation. It is open to the public during daylight hours from May to October and is a cherished spot on Mount Desert Island for both locals and visitors.
