Winery
Barboursville Vineyards in Virginia was founded in 1976 by Gianni Zonin, an heir to a long Italian winemaking tradition dating back to 1821.
The winery is situated on a historic 870-acre estate that once belonged to James Barbour, Virginia’s 19th governor and a close friend of Thomas Jefferson, featuring the ruins of the Barbour mansion designed by Jefferson himself.
This vineyard was one of the first in the modern Virginia wine industry to successfully cultivate European vinifera grape varieties, marking a turning point in the state's wine production. With over 160 acres planted, Barboursville combines old-world Italian winemaking philosophies and new-world techniques to produce a range of highly regarded wines, including their flagship Octagon red blend.
The estate draws about 80,000 visitors each year and its wines have received numerous awards, including being served at high-profile events like the royal wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton. Barboursville’s success helped boost Virginia’s reputation as a world-class wine region.
