Historical Landmark
Bass Harbor Head Light Station, built in 1858 on Mount Desert Island at the entrance to Bass Harbor and Blue Hill Harbor, is a historic lighthouse constructed to aid mariners navigating the dangerous reefs and waters of the area.
The 32-foot tall cylindrical brick tower is attached to a one-and-a-half-story wooden keeper’s house by a covered walkway. Early features included a hand-rung fog bell, later replaced in 1898 by a 4,000-pound bell housed in a fog signal building that still stands. The original fifth-order Fresnel lens was replaced in 1902 with a fourth-order lens, manufactured by Henry-Lepaute in France, which remains in use today.
The light was converted to electric operation in 1949 and automated in 1974, ending the era of civilian lighthouse keepers. The station includes other original structures such as an oil house and boat house, and it has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1988.
Today, the lighthouse continues to serve as an active aid to navigation and is a popular scenic spot for visitors due to its picturesque setting on rugged coastal cliffs.
