Tourist Attraction
Belle Meade Historic Site and Winery in Nashville, Tennessee, originated as a plantation established in 1807 by John Harding.
Named "Belle Meade," meaning "beautiful meadow," the estate grew into a premier thoroughbred horse farm under the Harding family, gaining national acclaim for breeding champion racehorses like Iroquois, the first American-bred horse to win the English Derby. The site features a Greek Revival mansion built in 1853 and many original outbuildings such as a dairy, stable, and carriage house.
During the Civil War, the estate was occupied and damaged but later recovered. After financial difficulties and changes in the horse racing industry, the land was sold off in the early 20th century, with much of it becoming the upscale residential city of Belle Meade. The mansion and 30 acres were preserved and are now managed as a museum and winery, offering historic tours and wine tastings.
The site also reflects and honors the legacy of the enslaved African Americans who lived and worked there, with efforts to educate visitors about their experiences before and after emancipation. Belle Meade Historic Site is recognized for its architectural beauty, equestrian legacy, and cultural history.
