Historical Landmark
Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site in Flat Rock, North Carolina, preserves Connemara, the 264-acre farm where Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Carl Sandburg lived his final 22 years from 1945 until his 1967 death, writing over a third of his works amid rolling pastures, woods, trails, lakes, gardens, and his wife Lilian's champion dairy goat farm.
Originally built in 1838 as a Greek Revival summer home called Rock Hill by Christopher Memminger, it passed through owners like William Gregg and Ellison Smyth—who renamed it Connemara—before the Sandburgs bought it for its writing solitude and goat pastures, with the site donated to the National Park Service in 1968 and opened to visitors in 1974.
Guests tour the preserved house filled with 10,000 books, family artifacts, and mid-century furnishings, visit the active goat barns, hike five miles of trails, and explore the landscape that inspired Sandburg's poetry on American life.
