The Catacombs in Indianapolis, located beneath the City Market's west plaza, are the remains of Tomlinson Hall, a grand public building constructed in 1886 and destroyed by fire in 1958.
These underground passageways, about 20,000 square feet in size, feature brick-barrel-vaulted arches and limestone columns, and were originally used for storing and transporting goods, such as meat and produce, for the bustling market above. The cool underground environment allowed vendors to keep perishables fresh before the advent of modern refrigeration.
