Clark Fork

Clark Fork, Idaho, United States

River

The Clark Fork River is a major river flowing through western Montana and northern Idaho in the United States.

It originates near Butte, Montana, at the confluence of Silver Bow and Warm Springs creeks, close to the Continental Divide. The river runs for about 310 to 360 miles northwest through a long valley nestled at the base of several mountain ranges, including the Cabinet Mountains, and gathers water from a vast watershed of about 14 million acres.

As Montana's largest river by volume, it passes through varied terrain and connects with several significant tributaries such as the Blackfoot, Bitterroot, St. Regis, and Flathead rivers. Eventually, the Clark Fork enters northern Idaho, where it is dammed at the Cabinet Gorge Dam near the town of Cabinet, before flowing into Lake Pend Oreille near the small town named Clark Fork.

This river is integral to the region, providing irrigation, hydropower, drinking water, critical wildlife habitat, and recreational opportunities, while also being part of the larger Columbia River Basin ecosystem. Historically, the river and adjacent areas have been affected by industrial pollution, but ongoing cleanup efforts are improving its health and supporting local communities and ecosystems.
