Monument
The Crazy Horse Memorial in South Dakota is an immense mountain sculpture in progress, created to honor the legendary Lakota leader Crazy Horse and Native American heritage.
The project began in 1948 after Oglala Lakota Chief Henry Standing Bear commissioned sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski, who had worked on Mount Rushmore, to carve a monument celebrating Native American culture and the heroic legacy of Crazy Horse. The memorial depicts Crazy Horse riding a horse with an outstretched arm, symbolizing his defense of his people's land and way of life.
Though the face of Crazy Horse, measuring 87 feet high, was completed in 1998, the entire sculpture is ongoing and will be the largest mountain carving in the world once finished. The project is staffed and funded privately by the Ziolkowski family and supporters, and also serves as a cultural and educational center with a museum, visitor facilities, and events.
The memorial stands in the Black Hills of South Dakota, drawing visitors who wish to pay tribute to Native American history and culture, despite some controversy within Indigenous communities regarding the monument's impact on sacred lands.
