The project began in 1948 after Oglala Lakota Chief Henry Standing Bear commissioned sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski, who had worked on Mount Rushmore, to carve a monument celebrating Native American culture and the heroic legacy of Crazy Horse. Though the face of Crazy Horse, measuring 87 feet high, was completed in 1998, the entire sculpture is ongoing and will be the largest mountain carving in the world once finished.
