Historical Landmark
The Currituck Beach Lighthouse in North Carolina was constructed starting in 1872 and first lit on December 1, 1875, to fill a dark 40-mile stretch of dangerous coastline between Cape Henry, Virginia, and Bodie Island, North Carolina.
It is the last large brick lighthouse built on the Outer Banks, standing 162 feet tall with its original exposed red brick exterior distinguishing it from other regional lighthouses. The lighthouse was equipped with a powerful first-order Fresnel lens that could reach ships 18 nautical miles away.
A Victorian-style keeper's house was added in 1876 to accommodate the lighthouse keepers and their families. The light was automated in 1939, ending the need for resident keepers. Due to Currituck's remote location, the lighthouse and associated buildings fell into disrepair over time but were eventually preserved.
The lighthouse remains operational and is now open to the public as a historical landmark, offering a glimpse into maritime history and coastal navigation.
