Historical Landmark
Fallingwater is a house museum located in Stewart Township, southwestern Pennsylvania, famously designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built over a waterfall on Bear Run.
Constructed between 1936 and 1939 as a weekend retreat for the Kaufmann family, owners of Kaufmann's Department Store, it marked a turning point in Wright’s career, emphasizing his philosophy of integrating architecture with nature. The design features cantilevered terraces mimicking natural rock formations and a layout that orients every room to receive natural light.
Despite structural challenges during construction, including sagging terraces, the house gained fame for its daring and harmonious design. After the Kaufmann family donated the property to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy in 1963, it opened as a museum in 1964 with much of the original furniture and art preserved.
Fallingwater is celebrated as a masterpiece of modern architecture and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracting around 150,000 visitors annually.
