Historical Place
Fort Raleigh National Historic Site on Roanoke Island, North Carolina, preserves the site of the first English attempts to colonize North America from 1585 to 1587 under Sir Walter Raleigh, including the reconstructed earthwork fort from Ralph Lane's "New Fort in Virginia" and the infamous "Lost Colony" of 1587 that vanished mysteriously, leaving behind the birthplace of Virginia Dare, the first English child born in the New World.
The 513-acre park also commemorates a Roanoke Indian village, the 1862 Civil War Battle of Roanoke Island where Union forces captured the area, and the Roanoke Island Freedmen's Colony that housed over 2,200 formerly enslaved people by 1864 as one of the first self-sustaining free Black communities in the South.
Visitors explore trails, a modern visitor center with exhibits and films, the outdoor "The Lost Colony" play by the Roanoke Island Historical Association, and monuments like the 2001 First Light of Freedom honoring the Freedmen's Colony amid maritime forest and coastal views.
