The site encompasses 20 historic buildings constructed mostly of limestone, a parade ground, and restored tallgrass prairie, reflecting military and civilian life of that era.
Fort Scott played a significant role as a supply depot, general hospital, and a refuge for displaced people, including African American soldiers who formed the 1st Kansas Colored Infantry. After the war, the fort was used to protect expanding railroads until its final closure in 1873.
