Historical Place
Fort Scott National Historic Site in Kansas preserves one of the best examples of a frontier military fort built in the mid-19th century, founded in 1842 and named after General Winfield Scott.
It served as a critical military base on the edge of American settlement during volatile times, including Bleeding Kansas and the Civil War, providing protection for settlers, managing relations with Native American tribes, and supporting Union forces. The site encompasses 20 historic buildings constructed mostly of limestone, a parade ground, and restored tallgrass prairie, reflecting military and civilian life of that era.
Fort Scott played a significant role as a supply depot, general hospital, and a refuge for displaced people, including African American soldiers who formed the 1st Kansas Colored Infantry. After the war, the fort was used to protect expanding railroads until its final closure in 1873.
Today, visitors can explore restored structures and witness living history programs that convey the complex stories of the nation's westward expansion, conflict, and development.
