Fort Smith National Historic Site

Fort Smith National Historic Site, Arkansas, United States

Historical Place

Fort Smith National Historic Site in Arkansas preserves the remains of two U.S. military forts established in the 19th century along with the federal courthouse and jails associated with law enforcement in Indian Territory.

The original fort, founded in 1817 at Belle Point on the Arkansas River, was built to maintain peace between the Osage and Cherokee tribes amidst conflicts triggered by westward migration and U.S. Indian policy. The fort was abandoned in 1824 but was reestablished in 1838 as tensions increased following the Indian Removal Act.

This second fort served as a supply depot, military post during the Mexican-American War, and changed hands during the Civil War. After 1871, the military left and the federal court took over the site, with Judge Isaac C. Parker famously presiding during a lawless era, enforcing order in the region with a high number of capital punishments.

Today, the site offers a window into frontier military history, Indian policy, and law enforcement in the Old West, revealing layers of American expansion and justice in a turbulent era.
