Historical Landmark
Frank Lloyd Wright's Kentuck Knob, located in southwestern Pennsylvania near Uniontown, is a notable Usonian-style home designed in 1956 for I. N. and Bernardine Hagan, local ice-cream entrepreneurs.
Despite being busy with major projects, Wright agreed to design the house without ever visiting the site, relying instead on contour maps and photographs. Set on the southern slope of a hillside rather than its summit, the design uses indigenous materials like sandstone and red cypress to blend organically with the landscape.
The house features a complex layout with 54 different angles, expansive glass walls, and cantilevered overhangs that reflect Wright’s philosophy of harmony between architecture and nature. After the Hagans lived there until the mid-1980s, the property changed hands and was restored following a fire in the late 1980s.
Open to the public since 1996, Kentuck Knob is recognized as a National Historic Landmark and remains a stunning example of Wright’s later work and his vision for affordable yet artful American homes.
