Idaho Falls is a city of nearly 69,000 residents located on the banks of the Snake River in southeastern Idaho and serves as the county seat of Bonneville County.
It began as the Eagle Rock settlement around a ferry crossing and timber-frame toll bridge built in the 1860s to support westward migration and mining developments in the surrounding region. The city was renamed Idaho Falls in 1891 after the scenic rapids and falls on the river, which were later modified to generate hydroelectric power.
Historically, the area was home to the Shoshone-Bannock and Northern Paiute Indigenous tribes. The arrival of the railroad in the late 19th century accelerated its growth, and irrigation projects transformed the surrounding desert into fertile farmland producing crops like barley, potatoes, and alfalfa.
Today, Idaho Falls is an economic and cultural hub for eastern Idaho, driven by agriculture, high-tech industry anchored by the Idaho National Laboratory, retail, healthcare, and tourism. Its revitalized downtown features shops, restaurants, galleries, and theaters, making it a vibrant community that balances its rich history with modern growth.
