State Government Office
The Idaho State Capitol building in Boise is an impressive Renaissance Revival structure designed by architects John E. Tourtellotte and Charles Hummel, with construction beginning in 1905 and completing the main central portion by 1912, followed by wings finished in 1920.
The building features a prominent terra cotta dome rising 208 feet above the skyline, topped with a bronze eagle symbolizing Idaho’s ideals. Its exterior is made from locally quarried sandstone and granite, with historical details reflecting both ancient Greek and Roman architecture, including a grand portico supported by Corinthian columns. Inside, there is a spacious central rotunda with massive columns clad in elegant scagliola veneer and large, light-filled rooms for the House and Senate chambers.
The Capitol houses the state’s executive and legislative offices and public hearing spaces, including two underground office wings added in the 2000s to provide modern facilities while preserving the building's historic character. The design emphasizes balance and authority, with a monumental façade that invites dignified entry and serves as a symbol of Idaho’s government and history, actively serving as the seat of state government for over a century.
