Art Centre
The Indianapolis Art Center was founded in 1934 as a Works Progress Administration project during the Great Depression to support artists and provide art education.
Originally known as the Indianapolis Art League, it started with small studio classes and exhibitions held around the city. It became a nonprofit organization and over the decades expanded its facilities and programs. In 1976, it moved to its current location in the Broad Ripple neighborhood along the White River. The center's prominent 40,000-square-foot building was designed by the acclaimed Indianapolis-born architect Michael Graves and opened in 1996 after a major expansion.
The Art Center offers numerous art studios, galleries, an auditorium, and a sculpture park spread across 9.5 acres, including the ARTSPARK outdoor creativity area. It hosts over 50 exhibitions annually and provides art classes, workshops, and community events that engage thousands of members and visitors. The Indianapolis Art Center is a vibrant hub for both art education and creative expression in the Indianapolis community.
