The Japanese Tea Garden in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park originated as the Japanese Village and Tea Garden at the 1894 World's Fair, created by Australian George Turner Marsh who employed Japanese craftsmen.
After the fair, Japanese immigrant gardener Makoto Hagiwara took over management and greatly expanded the garden, introducing plants, birds, and koi fish from Japan and growing the garden to about five acres. The garden features classic elements like an arched drum bridge, pagodas, stone lanterns, koi ponds, and blooming cherry blossoms, providing a tranquil space for visitors.
During World War II, the Hagiwara family was forcibly removed and sent to internment camps amid anti-Japanese sentiment, and the garden was renamed the "Oriental Tea Garden" with some original Japanese features dismantled.
After the war, the garden's original name was restored, and it remains the oldest public Japanese-style garden in the U.S., cherished for its beauty, history, and cultural significance.
