Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site, North Dakota, United States

Historical Place

Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site, located near Stanton in central North Dakota at the confluence of the Knife and Missouri Rivers, preserves the archaeological remains of Hidatsa earthlodge villages that thrived as major trade and farming centers for over 11,000 years, with three main sites—Awatixa Xi'e, Awatixa, and Big Hidatsa—housing up to 210 lodge depressions from the 16th to 19th centuries.

These semi-permanent villages were home to Northern Plains Indians who grew corn, beans, and squash while trading surplus crops for bison meat, furs, and goods with nomadic tribes and later European fur traders, and the area is linked to Sacagawea, who lived in one of the villages before joining the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

Today, visitors explore a reconstructed full-size earthlodge, a modern museum with exhibits on daily Hidatsa life, a short introductory film, gardens, and trails through prairie, forest, and village sites like Sakakawea Village, offering insights into ancient ceremonies, games, and cultural exchanges in this 1,759-acre preserve established in 1974.
