Laurentia Vineyard and Winery in Madison, Ohio, in the Grand River Valley AVA, was conceived in 2009 by brothers Gary and Leonard during an Idaho elk hunt, inspired by fine wines and the region's unique terroir shaped 25,000 years ago by retreating glaciers that deposited rich soils moderated by Lake Erie breezes and the Grand River.
They purchased 14 acres in 2011, planting Chardonnay and Riesling at Stoltz Road, expanding to 43 estate acres by 2020 with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, and others using Y-trellis systems to combat harsh winters like the 2015 Polar Vortex, breaking ground on the winery in 2013 and opening to the public on July 1, 2015.
Award-winning low-intervention wines like the 2015 Stoltz Block Cabernet Sauvignon and 2021 Estate Unoaked Chardonnay shine alongside tastings, locally sourced charcuterie, flatbreads, and small plates in a rustic log cabin tasting room with valley views, patio seating, and year-round hours drawing visitors to its European-style production.
