Leaning Tower of Niles

Leaning Tower of Niles, Illinois, United States

Tourist Attraction

The Leaning Tower of Niles in Niles, Illinois, is a half-size replica of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, completed in 1934.

It was designed by architect Albert L. Farr and built by industrialist Robert Ilg to serve as a water tower for swimming pools in a recreation park he created for his employees. The tower stands 94 feet tall, leans 7.4 feet, and includes eight floors with a bell chamber housing historic bells from Italy. In 1960, the park and tower were donated to the local YMCA, and the Village of Niles took over renovation in the 1990s, adding fountains, a reflecting pool, and landscaping to the surrounding plaza.

The tower is not open to the public for interior tours but serves as an iconic landmark symbolizing the town’s connection to the original Pisa tower; in 2019, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The plaza hosts summertime concerts and is a popular spot for photography and community events.
