Liberty Bell

Liberty Bell, Pennsylvania, United States

Historical Landmark

The Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was commissioned in 1751 by the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly to hang in the new State House, now known as Independence Hall.

Cast in London and delivered in 1753, the bell cracked shortly after its arrival and was twice recast by local artisans John Pass and John Stow, whose names appear on the bell. It bears the inscription from Leviticus, “Proclaim LIBERTY Throughout all the Land unto all the Inhabitants Thereof,” which became a powerful symbol of freedom. Although the bell did not ring on July 4, 1776, it is believed to have rung on July 8 during the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence.

During the Revolutionary War, it was hidden in Allentown, Pennsylvania, to prevent its capture by British forces. The bell later became an emblem for the abolitionist movement, symbolizing the fight against slavery, and was also adopted by the women’s suffrage and civil rights movements. It was moved to a glass pavilion at Independence National Historical Park in 1976 and then to the larger Liberty Bell Center in 2003, where it remains a major historic landmark and powerful symbol of American independence and liberty.
