Historical Place
The Lincoln Home National Historic Site in Springfield, Illinois, preserves the house where Abraham Lincoln lived with his family from 1844 until 1861, before becoming the 16th president of the United States.
The Greek Revival-style house was originally purchased by the Lincolns for $1,500 and expanded in 1856 to accommodate their growing family, featuring 12 rooms over two floors. This home is the only one Lincoln ever owned, where three of his children were born and one died.
The house has been restored to its 1860 appearance and stands in a residential neighborhood with wood plank sidewalks reminiscent of the era. The site extends beyond the house to include a historic district of four blocks with other preserved homes and buildings reflecting the Lincoln family's community and times.
Lincoln's son donated the home to the State of Illinois in 1887 with the condition it be kept in good repair and open to the public for free. Today, it is managed by the National Park Service and attracts visitors globally who come to understand Lincoln's life before his presidency, making it a significant symbol of the American dream and history.
