Stadium
Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis opened in August 2008 to replace the RCA Dome as the home of the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts.
It was designed by the Dallas firm HKS, with significant input from Indiana-based architects, and features a distinctive postmodern style with brick, steel, and glass that reflects Indiana’s sports heritage. The stadium covers about 1.8 million square feet, nearly two and a half times the size of the RCA Dome, and seats approximately 67,000 for football games, expandable to over 70,000 for basketball.
Its most notable feature is a retractable roof made of two massive panels, each weighing around 2.5 million pounds, which open or close in about 11 minutes, accompanied by a large operable glass window offering scenic views of downtown Indianapolis. Lucas Oil Stadium hosts a wide range of events, including NFL games, NCAA Final Fours, the NFL Draft Combine, concerts, and conventions.
It has 7 locker rooms, 139 suites, spacious concourses, extensive exhibit space, and other modern amenities designed to accommodate sports, entertainment, and corporate events, making it a central venue in Indianapolis' sports and events landscape.
