The Maine Lobster Festival began in 1947 as a community effort in Camden to revive summer activities and create a market for Maine lobsters.
After an initial loss, the festival moved to Rockland the following year, where it expanded to a multi-day event featuring a parade, a concert, lobster feasts, and the coronation of the first “Miss Maine Seafoods,” later known as the Sea Goddess. The festival has grown into a major annual celebration held on the first weekend of August, attracting up to 80,000 visitors with traditions like serving vast amounts of lobster cooked in some of the largest lobster kettles in the world, a grand parade, cooking contests, and family-friendly events such as a lobster eating contest and a Little Lobster Diaper Derby.
Now one of Maine’s premier summer festivals, it highlights the state's lobster industry and maritime heritage while providing entertainment, food, and cultural activities that bring together locals and visitors.
