Tourist Attraction
Meramec Caverns is a spectacular limestone cave system near Stanton, Missouri, extending about 4.6 miles and formed over 400 million years through the erosion of limestone by underground water.
It has historical significance as the first cave west of the Mississippi River explored by Europeans in 1722 and was known to Native Americans long before that, who used it as shelter. The cave was mined for saltpeter, an essential ingredient for gunpowder, particularly during the Civil War when the Union Army operated a saltpeter factory inside.
It also served as a reputed hideout for the outlaw Jesse James. The caverns were opened as a public tourist attraction in 1935 by Lester B. Dill, who promoted the site creatively, even inventing the bumper sticker for advertising.
Today, it is a popular destination along historic Route 66, offering guided tours through its spectacular formations, attracting around 150,000 visitors annually and holding the title of Missouri's most visited cave.
