Established in 1787 by Revolutionary War officer Leven Powell, the town was originally called Chinn’s Crossroads for early settler Joseph Chinn, a cousin of George Washington, before being renamed for its location midway between Alexandria and Winchester along the Ashby Gap trading route.

Known as the "Nation's Horse and Hunt Capital," Middleburg has a long tradition of foxhunting, steeplechases, and large equestrian estates that attract visitors from across the country. Its 19th-century historic district, recognized on the National Register of Historic Places, includes landmarks such as the Red Fox Inn & Tavern, which dates back to 1728 and claims to be the oldest continuously operated inn in the U.S.
