Cultural Landmark
The Mill Mountain Star, also known as the Roanoke Star, is a 100-foot tall illuminated star built atop Mill Mountain in Roanoke, Virginia, in 1949.
It was originally created by the Roanoke Merchants Association as a seasonal Christmas decoration to boost holiday shopping and promote the city, but its popularity led to it being lit every night year-round. Constructed with 2,000 feet of neon tubing forming three nested stars, it is the world's largest freestanding illuminated man-made star and has become an iconic symbol of Roanoke, often called the "Star City of the South."
The star overlooks the city from the 1,703-foot peak of Mill Mountain, a site long used for recreation. The first lighting ceremony took place on Thanksgiving Eve in 1949, attended by a small crowd and Roanoke's mayor. The Mill Mountain Star is recognized on the National Register of Historic Places and remains a beloved cultural landmark and tourist attraction.
