Monument
Monument Rocks, also known as the Chalk Pyramids, is a striking series of large chalk formations located in Gove County, Kansas, about 25 miles south of Oakley.
These formations reach heights of up to 70 feet and include dramatic buttes and arches sculpted by erosion. They originated around 80 million years ago during the Cretaceous Period when the area was covered by the Western Interior Seaway, a vast inland sea that split North America. The chalk is composed of accumulated marine sediments including limestone and shale, rich in fossils of ancient marine reptiles, fish, and clams.
Monument Rocks was the first landmark in Kansas designated as a National Natural Landmark and is recognized for both its geological and paleontological significance. Although on private land, visitors are allowed to explore the site with restrictions such as no climbing or fossil collecting to protect the fragile formations.
The site is part of the scenic and historic landscape of the Kansas plains, admired for its unique beauty and importance in understanding ancient environments.
