Botanical Garden
The Norfolk Botanical Garden began in 1938 as an Azalea Garden project on about 30 acres of land near Mirror Lake, initiated by Norfolk City Manager Thomas P. Thompson and horticulturist Frederic Heutte.
Funded by a Works Progress Administration grant, 200 African American women and 20 men laboriously cleared the land and planted thousands of azaleas, rhododendrons, and daffodils, creating a beautiful landscape intended to welcome visitors arriving at the nearby airport. Over time, the garden expanded to 158 acres, adding diverse themed gardens such as Japanese, desert plants, colonial, and rose gardens, as well as manmade canals and extensive educational facilities.
The garden became a hub for annual events like the International Azalea Festival, which celebrates the cultures of NATO member countries. Managed by the Old Dominion Horticultural Society since 1958, Norfolk Botanical Garden is recognized for its rich history, impressive plant collections, and commitment to conservation and education, offering visitors a blend of natural beauty and cultural significance.
