Park Loop Road

Park Loop Road, Maine, United States

Route

Park Loop Road is a 27-mile scenic route within Acadia National Park on the eastern side of Mount Desert Island, Maine.

Primarily a one-way clockwise loop, it connects numerous popular natural attractions such as Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, Otter Cliff, Jordan Pond, and Cadillac Mountain, providing access to trails, picnic areas, and scenic overlooks.

Constructed between 1921 and 1958 with funding from philanthropist John D. Rockefeller Jr., the road was designed to harmonize with the landscape while offering stunning views of Acadia’s mountains, forests, lakes, and coastline. It begins and ends near the Hulls Cove Visitor Center and is two-way only on a short section near Bar Harbor.

The road is mostly closed to vehicle traffic in winter, with only a small section near Sand Beach remaining open. Driving the full loop without stops takes about an hour, but travelers typically spend several hours exploring the many overlooks, hiking trails, and park highlights along the way.
