Tourist Attraction
Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, located in Bristol, Maine, was originally built in 1827 under the order of President John Quincy Adams to aid navigation at the entrance to Muscongus Bay.
Due to poor construction, the current white, pyramidal rubble stone tower was rebuilt in 1835 and stands 34 feet tall, with its light positioned 79 feet above sea level. It features a fourth-order Fresnel lens installed in 1856, one of only six such lenses still operational in Maine.
The lighthouse played a key role in guiding maritime traffic through dangerous coastal waters and has a rich history including automation in 1934 which eliminated the need for resident keepers. The site includes a keeper's house and historically had a fog bell, later replaced by a fog signal building.
Pemaquid Point Light is noted for its picturesque setting on granite cliffs and is one of Maine’s most photographed landmarks. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985 and was featured on the Maine state quarter in 2003, symbolizing its importance to the region’s maritime heritage.
