Roanoke

Roanoke, Virginia, United States

Locality

Roanoke, Virginia, originally called Big Lick due to a nearby salt lick, began as a small settlement in the 1740s and grew substantially after becoming a railroad hub in the late 19th century.

The arrival of the Norfolk and Western Railroad and the Shenandoah Valley Railroad in the 1880s transformed it from a rural farming community into a thriving industrial and commercial city known as the "Magic City" for its rapid growth. It officially became the Town of Roanoke in 1882 and was chartered as an independent city in 1884. Roanoke’s growth was marked by expansion, infrastructure challenges, and racial tensions, as African American neighborhoods often received fewer public services during segregation.

The city developed key institutions and recreational sites like Mill Mountain and the historic Hotel Roanoke. Although Roanoke experienced economic setbacks with the decline of the railroad industry in the late 20th century, it remains a vital cultural and economic center in the Blue Ridge region of Virginia.
