Salmon River

Salmon River, Idaho, United States

River

The Salmon River in Idaho flows for about 425 miles through some of the most rugged and remote terrain in the United States, draining a large watershed of around 14,000 square miles.

It originates in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area near Galena Summit at over 9,200 feet elevation and drops more than 7,000 feet before joining the Snake River. Known as the "River of No Return," this name refers to a largely roadless stretch between Salmon and Riggins, where boats traveling downstream could not return upstream due to powerful currents.

The river flows through deep and wild canyons, some of the deepest in the country, surpassing even the Grand Canyon in places. The area has a rich natural history with geology dating back over a billion years and has been home to Native American tribes for thousands of years, including the Nez Perce. The river was a challenging barrier for pioneers and miners, with steep terrain and gold mining communities historically established along its course.
