It was first exhibited at New York City's Museum of Modern Art before being relocated to Philadelphia in 1958, where it was reassembled in Fairmount Park on a site that had hosted a Japanese temple gate since the early 1900s. The site includes authentic Japanese residential gardens designed by Tansai Sano, featuring elements like koi ponds, waterfalls, and bridges.
Shofuso symbolizes post-war peace and friendship between Japan and the United States and is maintained by the Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia. It is recognized as one of the top Japanese gardens in the U.S. and contains rare features such as a hinoki bark roof, the only one of its kind outside Japan.
