Silver Mountain Resort in northern Idaho, located near Kellogg in the Silver Valley mining region, originated as Jackass Ski Bowl in 1967, named after the burro Bill whose discovery led to local mining booms.
It was renamed Silverhorn in 1973 after the original owners lost the resort to bankruptcy, then reopened and expanded as Silver Mountain Resort in 1990 following community-backed investments and the construction of a gondola from Kellogg to the ski area. The resort offers year-round outdoor activities including skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, hiking, and a large indoor water park called Silver Rapids.
The ski terrain spans over 1,600 acres with varied runs and modern lifts, including the world’s longest gondola ride. The resort integrates rich mining heritage with modern recreation, featuring newer condo developments and a golf course, making it a popular destination for winter sports and summer adventures on Idaho’s scenic mountains.
