Spearfish Falls is a beautiful 47-foot waterfall located in the heart of Spearfish Canyon near the Savoy area in South Dakota.
The short trail to the falls begins near the Latchstring Inn restaurant and leads visitors to the bottom of the canyon where the roaring waters can be seen up close. An overlook deck on the south side of the restaurant allows those who prefer not to hike to still enjoy a view of the falls. The falls and surrounding canyon area are especially scenic in autumn when the foliage creates vibrant colors, and in winter when the mist from the falls forms icy formations on the rocks and trees.
Spearfish Canyon features limestone cliffs and lush hillsides, making the area a favorite for photographers, hikers, and nature lovers. The falls experienced a period of reduced flow in the 20th century due to a nearby mining operation, but the natural water flow was restored after the mine closed in 2002, returning the falls to their full splendor.
