Historical Landmark
Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens in Akron, Ohio, is a National Historic Landmark and the nation's sixth largest historic home open to the public, built between 1912 and 1915 as the estate of F.A. Seiberling, co-founder of the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, and his wife Gertrude.
Named from Old English for "stone quarry" after the property's natural feature, the 65-room Tudor Revival manor house spans 64,500 square feet with original furnishings in 95% of its spaces, including a music room organ and grand hall tapestries, surrounded by 70 acres of meticulously restored gardens designed by Warren H. Manning, such as the Japanese Garden and English Garden.
Opened as a nonprofit historic house museum in 1957 by the Seiberling family, it features five historic buildings like the Gate Lodge—birthplace of Alcoholics Anonymous—a conservatory, carriage house, and seasonal events drawing visitors to explore its architectural splendor, family legacy, and horticultural beauty year-round.
