Stone Hill Winery

Stone Hill Winery, Missouri, United States

Winery

Stone Hill Winery, located in Hermann, Missouri, was founded in 1847 by German immigrant Michael Poeschel and is the oldest and largest winery in Missouri.

It rapidly grew to become the second largest winery in the United States and the third largest in the world by the early 1900s, producing over a million gallons of wine annually. The winery earned international acclaim with numerous gold medals, including the "Best Red Wine of All Nations" at the 1873 Vienna World’s Fair. Prohibition forced the winery to close in 1920, during which its extensive underground cellars were used for mushroom farming.

In 1965, Jim and Betty Held purchased and restored the winery, reigniting Missouri’s wine industry. Today, Stone Hill Winery remains a family-run business celebrated for its award-winning wines, historic architecture, and as a major attraction in Missouri’s wine country offering tours, tastings, and dining in its restored 19th-century buildings.
