The Duquesne Incline

The Duquesne Incline, Pennsylvania, United States

Public Transport Station

The Duquesne Incline in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, opened in 1877 and was designed by Hungarian-American engineer Samuel Diescher.

Originally steam-powered, the incline served both cargo and passengers, primarily residents of Mt. Washington who wanted an easier way to access the top of the hill. The incline is 800 feet long and climbs 400 feet at a steep 30-degree angle. By the mid-20th century, many inclines in Pittsburgh closed due to competition from roads and vehicles, but the Duquesne Incline was preserved thanks to a community fundraising effort in 1962 that restored it and reopened it as a nonprofit attraction and transit option.

It has since become a historic landmark recognized for its engineering significance and as one of the last functioning passenger inclines, offering stunning views of Pittsburgh’s skyline and rivers from its summit station.
