Tourist Attraction
The Keeper of the Plains is a 44-foot steel sculpture created by Kiowa-Comanche artist Blackbear Bosin and erected in 1974 at the confluence of the Arkansas and Little Arkansas rivers in Wichita, Kansas.
The statue stands elevated on a 30-foot rock promontory and depicts a Native American figure with hands raised in prayer to the Great Spirit, symbolizing unity and respect for the Indigenous tribes of the region. It serves as a powerful cultural icon for Wichita and a tribute to the Native American heritage that continues in the area. At night, fire drums at the base light the statue in a dramatic Ring of Fire ceremony, enhancing its spiritual atmosphere.
The surrounding plaza includes elements reflecting the Plains Indian way of life with native plants and interpretive displays, creating a site that honors history while inviting visitors to reflect and connect with the land and its peoples. The sculpture was dedicated during the United States Bicentennial celebration and has since become one of Wichita's most beloved landmarks.
