Waterfall
Upper Mesa Falls is a spectacular waterfall located on the Henrys Fork of the Snake River in eastern Idaho’s Caribou-Targhee National Forest.
It plunges about 114 feet, which is roughly the height of a ten-story building, and spans 200 feet in width, creating a powerful curtain of water that crashes into the canyon below. The falls are formed from layers of rhyolite tuff and basalt lava, remnants of a volcanic super-eruption that happened over a million years ago, giving the area a unique geological character.
Visitors can explore the falls via a short, accessible loop trail featuring boardwalks and lookouts that offer both close-up and panoramic views. The trail also passes the historic Big Falls Inn, built around 1915, which now serves as a visitor center. Upper Mesa Falls is part of the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway, a route celebrated for its impressive natural beauty and opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, photography, and seasonal access by snowmobile or skis in the winter.
The site is managed by the U.S. Forest Service and is open year-round, with entrance fees supporting maintenance and preservation efforts.
