Victoria Mansion, also known as the Morse-Libby House, is a historic Italianate-style brownstone villa in Portland, Maine, completed between 1858 and 1860 as a summer home for wealthy hotelier Ruggles Sylvester Morse.
Designed by architect Henry Austin, the mansion features an asymmetric facade with a four-story tower, verandas, and ornate windows inspired by Italian villas. The interior, created by cabinetmaker Gustave Herter and painter Giuseppe Guidicini, showcases richly carved woodwork, elaborate frescoes, gilded moldings, and almost all original furnishings, making it one of the best-preserved Victorian homes in the U.S. Noteworthy features include a sweeping carved wooden staircase beneath a stained-glass skylight, twin sinks in a guest bedroom, a Turkish smoking room reflecting early Islamic architectural influence in America, and early modern conveniences like hot and cold running water, gas lighting, and a servant call system.
After years of decline, it was preserved beginning in 1940 by Dr. William Holmes and his sister, preventing demolition, and it was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1971. Today, Victoria Mansion operates as a museum offering a vivid glimpse into Gilded Age opulence and Portland’s historical grandeur.
