West Quoddy Head Lighthouse

West Quoddy Head Lighthouse, Maine, United States

Historical Landmark

West Quoddy Head Lighthouse, located in Quoddy Head State Park in Lubec, Maine, is the easternmost lighthouse in the contiguous United States, built originally in 1808 under orders from President Thomas Jefferson.

The current iconic brick tower with distinctive red and white horizontal stripes was constructed in 1858 and stands 49 feet tall, with its beacon positioned 83 feet above sea level. It features a third-order Fresnel lens, one of only eight still in use on the Maine coast, and the light has a range of 18 miles. The lighthouse was established to guide ships safely through the nearby Quoddy Narrows, notorious for dangerous basaltic rocks.

Over time, it has seen several technological upgrades including fog bells and steam whistles used to warn mariners, with a fog signal building and oil house added in the late 19th century. The lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation, and while the tower itself is closed to the public, visitors can explore the grounds and the visitor center museum housed in the former keepers’ quarters. Its rugged coastal setting and rich maritime history make it a significant and picturesque landmark.
