Fresh Food Market
West Side Market in Cleveland's Ohio City neighborhood at West 25th Street and Lorain Avenue is the city's oldest continuously operating public market, originating as an open-air site in 1840 on land donated by Ohio City mayors Josiah Barber and Richard Lord, evolving into the Pearl Street Market by 1868 before the current yellow-brick hall opened in 1912 after nearly $735,000 in construction.
Designed by architects Hubbell & Benes with a 137-foot clock tower, vaulted Guastavino tile ceiling, and terra cotta reliefs of produce and animals, it features about 100 indoor stalls for meats, dairy, baked goods, and ethnic specialties plus 85 outdoor produce stands, serving Cleveland's immigrant communities for generations.
Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and named one of America's "10 Great Public Places" in 2008, it attracts over a million visitors yearly with diverse foods from global vendors, renovated in 2004, and now managed by a nonprofit while city-owned.
