Tourist Attraction
Willis Tower, formerly known as the Sears Tower, is a 110-story skyscraper in downtown Chicago, Illinois, and one of the most recognizable landmarks in the United States.
Completed in 1973 after three years of construction, it was designed by architect Bruce Graham and engineer Fazlur Rahman Khan of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. Standing 1,450 feet tall to its roof—or 1,729 feet including its antennas—it held the title of the world’s tallest building for 25 years.
The tower’s unique “bundled tube” structural design, consisting of nine interlinked steel tubes, made it both lighter and stronger, revolutionizing skyscraper engineering. Built as the headquarters for Sears, Roebuck & Company, it could accommodate over 16,000 workers and contained 4.5 million square feet of floor space. In 2009, its name officially changed to Willis Tower after London-based insurance firm Willis Group Holdings obtained naming rights.
The building’s most famous attraction is the Skydeck on the 103rd floor, which features “The Ledge,” a series of glass balconies extending four feet outside the building for dramatic city and lake views.
Today, Willis Tower remains the second-tallest building in the Western Hemisphere, housing offices, restaurants, exhibition spaces, and the Catalog retail complex added during major renovations completed in 2022. It continues to symbolize Chicago’s architectural innovation and pioneering spirit.
