Yorktown

Yorktown, Virginia, United States

Locality

Yorktown, Virginia, was founded in 1691 as a port on the York River for English colonists, primarily to facilitate the export of tobacco to Europe.

It was named after the city of York in England and became the county seat in 1696. By the mid-18th century, Yorktown was a bustling port with 250 to 300 buildings and a population nearing 2,000, supporting significant trade and commerce.

The town is most famous as the site of the decisive siege and surrender of British General Charles Cornwallis to American and French forces on October 19, 1781, marking the effective end of the American Revolutionary War in North America. Yorktown also played strategic roles during the Civil War, serving as a major supply port depending on control by the Union or Confederacy.

Today, Yorktown is preserved as part of Colonial National Historical Park and forms one leg of the historic triangle with Jamestown and Williamsburg, drawing visitors to its well-preserved Revolutionary War battlefield, waterfront, and historic landmarks like the Custom House and Grace Church.
