Scenic Point
The 16th Avenue Tiled Steps in San Francisco, also called the Moraga Steps, are a community-created mosaic stairway located in the Golden Gate Heights neighborhood.
The stairway has 163 steps adorned with more than 2,000 unique tiles formed from over 75,000 pieces of glass, depicting a flowing sea-to-sky theme with fish, shells, animals, and celestial images. Inspired by Brazil's Escadaria Selarón, the project was initiated in 2003 by local residents Jessie Audette and Alice Yee Xavier, who collaborated with artists Aileen Barr and Colette Crutcher to design the mosaics.
Funded largely by tile sponsorships and supported by the Mayor's Neighborhood Beautification Fund, the steps were completed and opened in 2005 with a ceremony featuring traditional lion dancers. This colorful stairway has since become a popular scenic and cultural landmark, symbolizing community effort, artistic expression, and neighborhood pride.
