Park
Will Rogers State Historic Park is a 186-acre California State Park located in the Santa Monica Mountains in Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles, established in 1944 to preserve the estate of beloved American humorist and movie star Will Rogers.
After rising from a vaudeville trick-roping act to become Hollywood's highest-paid actor in the 1930s, Rogers bought this land in the 1920s and developed a 31-room ranch house where he relaxed with family and friends, pursuing his favorite pastimes of horseback riding and roping until his tragic death in a 1935 plane crash.
His widow Betty donated the ranch to California State Parks in 1944, and today visitors can enjoy free guided tours of the Western ranch house filled with Western art and Native American rugs, hike scenic trails including the 2-mile Inspiration Loop Trail with stunning citywide views, go horseback riding, picnic on the former golf course, and watch polo matches on the city's only remaining polo field where Rogers once played with famous friends like Spencer Tracy and Walt Disney.
The park's chaparral-covered hills offer an easy escape from Los Angeles hustle, with best views at Inspiration Point during sunset when golden light illuminates the mountains, city, and ocean.
