Historical Landmark
Absecon Lighthouse in Atlantic City, New Jersey, is the state’s tallest lighthouse and the third-tallest masonry lighthouse in the United States, rising 171 feet above the Absecon Inlet.
Designed by George Meade—later a Union general in the Civil War—the lighthouse was built between 1854 and 1857 to help guide sailors past the treacherous local waters once known as “Graveyard Inlet.” It was equipped with a massive first-order Fresnel lens made in Paris, whose steady white beam could be seen nearly 20 miles out to sea.
The lighthouse operated until 1933 and today remains illuminated as a historic landmark rather than an active navigational aid. Restored through the efforts of the Inlet Public/Private Association in the 1990s, the site reopened to the public in 1999, featuring a museum, recreated keeper’s quarters, and educational exhibits about maritime life and local history.
Visitors can climb its 228 steps for panoramic views of the Atlantic City skyline and coastline. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Absecon Lighthouse continues to stand as a proud symbol of New Jersey’s maritime heritage and community preservation efforts.
